A new front-end for better performances of RPC in streamer mode

چکیده

Resistive plate chambers (RPC) operated in streamer mode will provide the trigger of the ALICE forward muon spectrometer at the future large hadron collider at CERN. In a previous study, we had demonstrated that the time resolution of RPC in streamer mode could be improved significantly using a new discrimination technique called A DUaL Threshold (ADULT). The conclusions were based on a small sample of cosmic events, hence with almost zero incident flux, collected on a very simple test bench. The ADULT method has then been implanted in a custom integrated circuit and new data have been taken during beam and irradiation tests. The principle and the advantages of ADULT are reminded. The performances of the detector equipped with the new chip are given. r 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

An ASIC dedicated to the RPCs’ front-end of the dimuon arm trigger in the ALICE experiment

A first prototype of the front-end ASIC dedicated to the trigger detector of the dimuon arm of ALICE has been designed and tested. This note introduces the new discrimination technique implanted in the chip in order to improve the time resolution of the Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) in the streamer mode. The electronic design is then described and the test results are presented.

Freonless gas mixtures for glass RPC operated in streamer mode

We have operated successfully glass Resistive Plate Counters (RPC) at the BELLE experiment by using a nonflammable gas mixture of 30% argon, 8% butane-silver and 62% freon, HFC-134a. This freon is nonozone depleting freon, but a freon has a high global warming potential in general. Thus a gas mixture for RPC might be desired to be freonless in the near future. We have tested the performance of ...

Test of freonless operation of resistive plate chambers with glass electrodes F 1 mm gas gap vs 2 mm gas gap

Non-freon gas mixtures (Ar/iso-C4H10) were tested as the chamber gas for 1 and 2 mm gas gap Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) with float glass as the resistive electrodes, operated in the streamer mode. With the narrower (1 mm) gas gap, streamer charge is reduced (B1=3), which reduces the dead time (and dead area), associated with each streamer, improving the detection efficiency. The best perfor...

Latest Results on RPCs for the ATLAS LVL1 Muon Trigger

The performances of 3, 2 and 1.5 mm gap RPCs operated with a heavy, environmentally safe industrial gas, C 2 H 2 F 4 , have been tested at cosmic ray fluxes. Emphasis is given to the study of avalanche-to-streamer transition. ( 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Resistive Plate Chambers will be used as the LVL1 muon trigger detector in the barrel region (DgD(1) of the ATLAS experim...

Optical study of the features of the streamer images in RPC

Optical images of the streamer from a Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) are observed using a transparent high-voltage electrode in the operation of streamer mode. The optical images are measured using CCD camera system in mixture Ar=C4H10 with and without C2H2F4: Area of typical streamer image is approximately 12 mm 2 in both gas mixtures with its surrounding halo of 2–4 mm in diameter. We also obs...
